I often see visitors worried about the temperatures they will experience during their winter holiday in Rovaniemi, so I wanted to clear up a few common misconceptions. If you’re planning a trip to Finnish Lapland, understanding the weather and knowing what to wear in Rovaniemi can make your experience much more enjoyable.

Winter temperatures in Rovaniemi can vary significantly. In recent years, it has even happened that we had -20°C in the evening and 0°C the following morning. Extreme cold is not uncommon in Lapland, and since I moved here, the coldest winter was two years ago when temperatures dropped below -38°C, with several weeks between -30°C and -35°C. (The photo of me completely covered in ice was taken during that period!)

The good news is that such extreme temperatures are becoming less frequent. Most visitors coming to Rovaniemi and Lapland today are unlikely to experience prolonged periods of extreme cold. While temperatures below -30°C can still happen, they are usually limited to only a few days or weeks throughout the entire winter season.

What temperatures can you expect in Rovaniemi during winter?

Most of the winter, temperatures in Rovaniemi range between -5°C and -15°C. That may sound intimidating, especially if you’re travelling from warmer countries, but the cold in Lapland is generally very dry. As long as you dress properly, it is usually much more comfortable than many visitors expect.

Temperatures below -25°C, however, start to become genuinely painful! 😂

What to Wear in Rovaniemi and Lapland During Winter

The secret to staying comfortable even at -30°C is wearing the right winter clothing. If you want to be fully prepared for your Lapland adventure, I strongly recommend bringing:

  • A warm wool hat or a hat with fur lining
  • Ski gloves that are insulated, waterproof, and windproof
  • Good thermal underwear and a thermal base layer (easily available at Decathlon and similar stores)
  • Windproof trekking pants or ski pants
  • A warm fleece or hoodie
  • A quality winter jacket designed for cold weather

Important: Bring winter boots with a non-slip sole. Sidewalks and roads in Rovaniemi are often icy and slippery throughout the winter. Please avoid moon boots if possible! 😅

If you want maximum comfort, you can also add an additional outer layer, such as insulated winter trousers or a second jacket, especially if you plan to spend long periods outdoors watching the Northern Lights.
