A four-day trip to Rovaniemi costs roughly €600–750 per person in summer, €800–1,100 in autumn, and €1,400–2,000 in December, excluding flights. The single biggest variable is not what you do — it is when you come. Accommodation in late December costs three to four times what the same room costs in September.
That gap is the most useful thing we can tell you. Most people plan a Lapland trip around a date they have already chosen, then flinch at the price. Shift the same trip by six weeks and you often get better conditions for half the money.

What each cost actually is
Before the month-by-month breakdown, here is what you are buying.
Flights. Most people route through Helsinki. Helsinki–Rovaniemi return runs roughly €70–150 in low season and €200–350 around Christmas. Direct seasonal charters from the UK, Italy, Spain and Poland operate from late November to early January and are priced accordingly.
Accommodation. Rovaniemi has three tiers, and the gap between them is wide:
- Budget — hostel dorms €25–40, budget hotels €75–95 per night
- Mid-range — three- and four-star hotels €150–280 per night in winter
- Glass igloos and Arctic resorts — €200–250 in September, €800–1000 in midwinter, and €2,000+ over Christmas week
That last line is the one worth reading twice. A glass igloo in September costs roughly a third of the same igloo on 27 December.
Food. Lunch buffets are the best value in town at €10–13. A casual dinner main costs €15–25; a three-course Lappish tasting menu runs €60–90 (ours is a reindeer farm dinner). Self-catering from a supermarket brings you down to €5–8 per meal. Budget €40–80 per person per day depending on how you eat.
Getting around. The airport bus is €7–8 each way. Local bus 8 to Santa Claus Village is €3–5. A taxi from the airport to the centre is €26–32. Car hire is €50–100 per day, and in winter you rarely need one — most tours include pickup. Ours covers anywhere within 15 km of the city centre.
Activities. This is where you have the most control. Across Rovaniemi, expect:
- Northern lights tours: €109 for 3–4 hours
- Husky sledding: €149 for a short ride, €175+ for a proper 5 km safari
- Reindeer farm visits: €109
- Snowmobile safaris: €115 for one hour
- Ice fishing: €109
Our own tours run from €1 to €489 depending on length and group size. Two or three good tours over four days is the sweet spot — more than that and you spend your holiday in transfer vans.
Summer in Rovaniemi: June and July
Roughly €600–750 per person for four days. The cheapest time to come by a clear margin, and badly underrated.
The sun does not set at all from early June to mid-July. Not “it gets dim” — it genuinely does not set. July is the warmest month, averaging 21°C by day and reaching the mid-twenties in a good week. June averages 18°C.
June
Midnight sun begins in earnest, Midsummer is celebrated properly, and the forest is at its greenest. Accommodation sits at €90–150 per night. Rivers are high from snowmelt, so hiking and canoeing are at their best.
July
The warmest month and the one to pick if you want actual summer weather. Locals swim in the Kemijoki. Berry season starts late in the month. Prices stay low because most international visitors have not worked out that Lapland has a summer.
What to do: hiking in Arctic forest, the amethyst mine tour, a sauna boat cruise, horse riding on the Arctic Circle, and bear watching — which only runs in the light months.
What you will not get: northern lights. The sky never gets dark enough. Do not let anyone sell you a summer aurora tour.

Autumn in Rovaniemi: September and October
Roughly €800–1,100 per person for four days. If you want aurora without winter prices, this is the answer.
Autumn in Lapland is called ruska — the two or three weeks when the birch and aspen turn gold and the ground cover turns deep red. It is the most photogenic the landscape gets all year, and almost nobody comes for it.
September
Averages around 13°C by day. Crystal-clear air, 13–15 hours of daylight, and the aurora season reopens as nights finally get dark again. Accommodation is 40–60% below winter rates.
Late September is our own favourite two weeks of the year. Ruska colours, aurora on clear nights, mild enough to hike in a fleece, and the restaurants have tables.
October
Averages 5°C by day and drops below freezing at night. Daylight drops to nine hours, which means long dark evenings and more aurora opportunities than September. Prices are still well below the winter peak.
What to do: autumn husky rides on wheeled carts, and aurora hunting from early September onwards.

Winter in Rovaniemi: November to March
Roughly €1,100–3,000 per person for four days, depending entirely on which weeks you pick. This is the classic Lapland trip, and the price swing inside the season is enormous.
November
Snow arrives and the full winter programme opens, usually in the second half of the month. Averages around -1°C by day. Accommodation €180–280. Aurora activity is strong and crowds are still thin. Good value for a first winter trip, with the caveat that early November can be a slushy in-between.
December
The month everyone wants, and the reason prices behave the way they do.
Two very different Decembers exist. 1–19 December is busy but affordable-ish — accommodation €250–400, full snow, dark by mid-afternoon, and a genuine festive feel without the crush. 20 December to 3 January is the peak: glass igloos at €2,000+ per night, hotels booked out months ahead, and tours selling out by October.
Daylight in mid-December is about two and a half hours, with the sun barely clearing the horizon. What you get instead is hours of blue twilight, which photographs beautifully.
If you are planning a Rovaniemi trip in December 2026, book by early October. Christmas week 2026 was largely gone by August.
January
The coldest and darkest month — averages -6°C by day and -14°C at night, with cold snaps well below -25°C. Prices drop sharply after the 6th. Aurora activity is excellent because the nights are so long, and the snow is deep and reliable.
February
Averages -6°C by day. Daylight returns fast — about eight hours by mid-month, with long pink-and-blue sunrises. Excellent aurora conditions and deep, settled snow. Accommodation €220–320, well below December.
March
The best month of the winter, and we say that as people who work here every season. Averages around 0°C by day, so it is noticeably more comfortable than January. Twelve hours of daylight. The snowpack is at its deepest and most reliable of the entire year. Skies are statistically clearer than midwinter. And rates run 20–40% below January.

Three ways to spend less without spending worse
- Move your dates, not your standards. Shifting from the last week of December to the first week of March typically saves 40–60% on accommodation for better snow and more daylight.
- Rent your winter clothing instead of buying it. A proper thermal overall, boots, gloves and a hat cost several hundred euros to buy for a trip you take once. Renting costs a fraction of that and saves a suitcase. Our winter clothing guide covers what you actually need.
- Book two good tours instead of four rushed ones. Guests who cram in four activities across four days spend most of the trip in transit. Two well-chosen tours and one free day nearly always makes for a better holiday and a smaller bill.
