You can look for the Northern Lights for free at Revontulilaavu in Rotarypuisto, near Arktikum in Rovaniemi. This riverside spot looks out over the Ounasjoki and is open to residents and visitors. Find Revontulilaavu on Google Maps. On a clear, dark night with aurora activity, you may see the lights from here. But a map pin is only a starting point: if clouds cover the sky, staying in the same place can mean spending your evening waiting without seeing a thing.
A free Northern Lights spot in Rovaniemi — and its limits
If you want to try seeing the Rovaniemi Northern Lights independently, Revontulilaavu is an option close to town. The difficulty is knowing whether it is the right place on your particular evening. Cloud cover can hide a display completely, and nearby artificial light can make faint auroras harder to pick out. A clear view across the river does not necessarily mean the clearest or darkest sky available that night.
When seeing the aurora is one of the main reasons for your trip, it helps to have more than one location in mind. On our tour, the guide checks conditions and chooses the stops accordingly. You can enjoy your daytime plans, whether that’s husky safaris, reindeer farms or Santa Claus Village, and leave the evening’s route planning to us.
When to see the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi
You might picture the aurora above deep snow, but you don’t have to visit in the middle of winter. The Northern Lights in Rovaniemi can appear from late August to early April, when the nights are dark enough. Each part of the season feels a little different:
September–October: walk among golden forests and look for auroras reflected in the lakes, with lower prices too.
December–February: enjoy deep snow and the longest nights. Come prepared for the coldest weather, down to -35 °C, and the highest prices.
Late March–early April: spend longer, sunnier days in the snow, then look for the aurora after dark, without the Christmas prices.
Why clouds can spoil a night at a fixed viewing spot
A promising aurora forecast can make it tempting to head straight to the park. But even strong activity is hidden by thick cloud. If you stay at Revontulilaavu while the sky above it remains covered, you may miss a display that is visible somewhere else. Our guides check cloud cover as well as aurora activity, looking for places where both give us a reason to stop. A tour cannot remove the clouds, but it gives you more flexibility than waiting at one spot.
How to read the Northern Lights forecast for Rovaniemi Today
If you’re checking the northern lights forecast for Rovaniemi this week for the first time, start with these two things:
Cloud cover: open a local weather app and look for clear patches during the evening. These help you see where there might be a chance of an open sky.
Aurora activity: check the Finnish Meteorological Institute or an aurora app for current activity and alerts.
About 3 days ahead, forecasts start to give you a clearer picture, but conditions can still change. We make the final call on the evening itself, which is why we confirm your tour’s start time on the day.
Why choosing the right location takes more than a map
A Google Maps pin tells you where to go, but it can’t tell you where the sky will be clearest tonight. Conditions can vary over short distances, and sometimes a drive of 30 km takes you from grey skies to stars. Going independently means checking those changes, choosing another stop and arranging the journey yourself. With our tour, your guide takes care of those decisions and selects the best northern lights spots around Rovaniemi for the evening’s conditions.
Why darker surroundings make a difference
You can see the aurora near town when conditions are right, so there is no need to rule out the park altogether. The trade-off is light: nearby lamps and the city’s glow can make a faint display less distinct. Our guides look for viewing locations away from artificial light, giving you darker surroundings in which to watch the sky.
Waiting in the cold is easier with a plan
The aurora doesn’t appear on a timetable. Displays often come in waves, and you may spend a while outdoors before anything changes. If you go independently, you’ll need to plan how to stay warm and how to get back when you’ve had enough. Layers, snow boots, mittens and a hat matter, especially at -20 °C. You can rent a full winter outfit in Rovaniemi. On our tour, transport, a campfire stop and a hot drink are part of the evening, so there’s less for you to organise.
Can I take photos of the Northern Lights with my phone?
You can photograph the Northern Lights with your phone, and newer models with good cameras can capture the colours and shapes quite well. It’s a lovely way to keep a quick memory of the evening. For a photograph that does the experience justice, though, a proper camera in the hands of a professional makes a real difference. The equipment, settings and experience of working in the dark help capture finer detail and create a carefully composed image. You get to be in the moment, with a photograph you’ll want to keep long after you’re home.

Rovaniemi Northern Lights FAQ
Are the Northern Lights guaranteed in Rovaniemi? No. Neither a free viewing spot nor a guided tour can guarantee a sighting. The benefit of our tour is the planning, transport and flexibility to choose stops for the conditions. If you add our aurora protection and don’t see the lights, you can choose a refund of the tour or a free second outing, subject to availability.
How many nights should I stay? A little extra time gives you more chances. Three to four nights in Rovaniemi gives you a good shot, especially if you keep a couple of evenings flexible so you can follow the weather.
What is the best month for the aurora in Rovaniemi? There isn’t one best month for everyone. We especially like September–October and March for their dark nights, milder temperatures and lower prices. Think about what you’d enjoy doing during the day, too.
Is the aurora tour suitable for children? Yes, families often join us. During stops, children can warm up in the vehicle or by the fire. If you’re planning daytime activities together, our reindeer farm visit and 2 km husky ride with Santa Claus Village are lovely options to consider.
